Experience the tranquil beauty of the Peak District on this 9.1km loop around the northern arm of Ladybower Reservoir. This route offers a perfect blend of accessibility and scenic immersion, featuring a gently undulating profile with a modest 64m of ascent. Runners will navigate a mix of well-maintained lanes and firm tracks, with approximately 30% of the course being paved. While the "hilly" rating suggests some climbing, the gradients are manageable, making it an excellent choice for those looking to build endurance without the crushing vertical gain found elsewhere in the High Peak. Expect sweeping water views and the refreshing atmosphere of the Derbyshire hills as you circle the water's edge.
Set within the heart of the High Peak near Bamford, Ladybower Reservoir is steeped in fascinating local history. Completed in the 1940s, the reservoir is most famous for its association with the "Dambusters" of the 617 Squadron, who practiced low-level flights over these very waters during WWII. As you run, you are circling the site where the villages of Derwent and Ashopton were submerged to create the reservoir; during particularly dry summers, the ruins of these "lost villages" occasionally emerge from the depths. It is a hauntingly beautiful landscape that provides a powerful sense of place and history for every mile you cover.
