Tackle the wild heart of the Peak District with this 8km ascent to Bleaklow Head, a route that embodies the rugged, peat-drenched character of the High Peak. Starting from the summit of Snake Pass, runners will face a technical out-and-back trail across exposed moorland. With over 100 meters of climbing and sections sitting well above the 500m contour line, expect a breezy, hilly challenge where the terrain is often saturated and soft underfoot. It is a fantastic test of ankle stability and mountain pacing, offering a true "off-grid" feel just a short distance from the trailhead.
Bleaklow is steeped in both natural majesty and somber history; the plateau is famously the site of several historical aircraft wrecks, including the Superfortress "Over Exposed," located not far from the main path. As you navigate the hags and groughs, you are running through a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for millennia, serving as a vital gritstone catchment for the surrounding valleys. Local runners know that the weather here is notoriously fickle—shifting from clear vistas to dense clag in minutes—making this route a quintessential gritstone experience for those who love the raw beauty of the Dark Peak.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
