Route Overview & Local Insights

This 15.1km loop offers a quintessential Peak District fell running experience, balancing a punchy 444m ascent with fast, flowing sections. Starting from Edale, you'll tackle the technical scramble of Grindsbrook Clough to reach the expansive Kinder Scout plateau. Once on the "roof" of the Peaks, the terrain shifts between rugged gritstone edges, springy peat hags, and well-maintained paved flagstones. The run past Ringing Roger provides some of the most dramatic rocky scenery in the High Peak before a long, rewarding descent through the heather of Crookstone Out Moor and the winding trails of Jaggers Clough. With several sections sitting above the 500m contour line, runners should be prepared for exposed conditions and exhilarating ridge-line views.

Kinder Scout is steeped in local history, most famously known as the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass, an act of civil disobedience that eventually led to the creation of the UK's National Parks and the "right to roam" that runners enjoy today. As you navigate the edges, look out for the unique wind-eroded gritstone formations like Ringing Roger, which long-standing local lore suggests can "sing" or chime when the wind hits the rocks at a specific angle. This area serves as the southernmost point of the Pennines, offering a wilder, more alpine feel than the rolling dales to the south, making it a favorite training ground for some of the UK’s most legendary fell runners.
