Route Overview & Local Insights

This 9.2km loop through the High Peak offers a quintessential gritstone experience, blending technical trail running with breathtaking ridge-line views. Starting with a gentle warm-up, the route quickly transitions into a demanding ascent toward Hollins Cross, testing your lungs before you reach the panoramic spine of the Great Ridge. At 337m of elevation gain, the climb to the summit of Mam Tor is steady but rewarding, leading into a technical, steep descent back toward the valley floor. Runners should prepare for varied underfoot conditions; while parts are paved, the journey through Cave Dale features a notoriously rocky limestone bed that requires nimble footwork and focused concentration, especially in wet weather.

Known locally as the "Shivering Mountain," Mam Tor is steeped in ancient history and geological drama. As you traverse the ridge, you are running over an Iron Age hillfort, once one of the highest settlements in Britain. The area is famous for its massive landslips, which eventually claimed the old A625 road, leaving behind a surreal, broken landscape that runners now navigate. Descending through Cave Dale provides a spectacular finish, as you pass directly beneath the towering ruins of Peveril Castle, a Norman fortress commissioned by William the Conqueror’s son. It’s a route that doesn't just challenge your fitness—it carries you through thousands of years of Peak District heritage.
