This 11.1km loop offers a quintessential Peak District challenge, blending technical grit with breathtaking ridge running. Starting from Edale, you'll tackle a rigorous ascent through Grindsbrook Clough before navigating the rugged edges of the Kinder Plateau. The terrain is a true runner's mix: expect springy peat, weather-worn gritstone, and well-maintained paved sections that allow for a faster turnover. With 430m of vertical gain and sections reaching over 500m in altitude, this route is physically demanding and exposed. The highlight for many is the rapid descent down the iconic stone steps of Jacob's Ladder, followed by a rewarding, fast finish across the grassy fields and lanes of Upper Booth back into the valley.
Edale is widely considered the spiritual home of British hill running, serving as the official start of the Pennine Way. This route traverses the southern fringes of Kinder Scout, the site of the famous 1932 Mass Trespass that eventually led to the creation of the UK's National Parks. As you run past Edale Cross—a medieval boundary marker—you are following in the footsteps of centuries of packhorse traders and shepherds. The microclimate here is notorious; the "Dark Peak" summits can be shrouded in mist while the valley remains sunny, making it an essential training ground for fell runners honing their mountain craft and navigation skills.
