Starting from the Bowden Bridge Car Park, this 11.4km circuit offers a quintessential Peak District fell running experience. Classified as a "Short Local" (SL) course, don't let the distance fool you; with 341m of vertical gain and only 20% paved surfaces, this is a technical test for seasoned trail runners. You’ll navigate a rugged mix of limestone trails, gritstone paths, and grassy climbs that can become notoriously boggy after a classic High Peak downpour. The ascent is steady and punchy, rewarding your efforts with expansive views across the dark peak moorlands before a sweeping, technical descent back toward the valley floor.
Hayfield is steeped in outdoor history, perhaps most famous as the starting point for the 1932 Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout, a pivotal moment that eventually led to the creation of the UK's National Parks. As you run "Around the Cloughs," you are traversing the very landscape that sparked the "right to roam" movement. The village itself retains a sturdy, industrial charm, having once been a center for calico printing. After conquering the stony tracks of the cloughs, local runners often congregate at one of the village's traditional pubs—The Packhorse or The Royal Hotel—where the community of hikers and fell runners is as much a part of the scenery as the hills themselves.
