This 8.3km semi-loop offers a quintessential Derbyshire running experience, blending quiet country lanes with the renowned effortless gradients of a former railway line. Starting from the historic market town of Ashbourne, you'll head out through the charming village of Mappleton along Spend Lane. The first half of the run features rolling hills and a modest 67m of ascent, providing enough of a challenge to get the heart rate up while rewarding you with sweeping views of the Henmore Valley. The return leg via the Tissington Trail is a runner's dream; the well-maintained gravel surface is flat and fast, allowing you to open up your stride as you cruise through the lush green canopy back toward the trailhead.
Steeped in Peak District history, the Tissington Trail follows the trackbed of the old London and North Western Railway, which once connected Ashbourne to Buxton. Runners today follow the same path that Victorian steam engines took through the "Gateway to the Peaks." Ashbourne itself is famous for its medieval street layout and the eccentric Royal Shrovetide Football match, but for the local running community, it serves as the perfect base for exploring the Limestone Way and the surrounding dales. Passing through Mappleton, keep an eye out for the unique bridge and the quiet rural architecture that makes this pocket of Derbyshire feel like a step back in time.
