This 14.1km adventure through the Derbyshire Dales offers a quintessential Peak District running experience, blending steady woodland ascents with fast, flowing gritstone edges. With an ascent of 233m, the route is moderately hilly, but the real challenge lies in the mixed terrain which is split evenly between paved surfaces and rugged moorland trails. Runners will enjoy the dramatic panoramic views from Curbar and Froggatt Edges, though the sections above 500m are exposed to the elements; expect technical footing on the gritstone and potentially rapid weather shifts that demand respect and proper gear.
Steeped in geological and social history, this area is famous for its "Dark Peak" gritstone, a favorite for generations of climbers and fell runners alike. As you traverse White Edge, you’re running through a landscape shaped by ancient bronze-age settlements and industrial gritstone quarrying. The "Longshaw Estate," managed by the National Trust, serves as a gateway to these moorlands and was once a shooting estate for the Duke of Rutland. Keep an eye out for the resident red deer herd and the iconic millstones that still litter the slopes—a nod to the area's heritage as a hub for millstone production centuries ago.
