This 13.9km clockwise loop offers a quintessential Peak District running experience, blending flat, fast stretches with challenging woodland climbs. Starting from the charming market town of Bakewell, you'll enjoy a gentle warm-up before tackling the technical ascent through Great Shacklow Wood. The middle section takes you along the floor of Monsal Dale; while incredibly scenic, be prepared for soft, grassy paths that can turn heavy after rain. The effort is rewarded as you climb toward the iconic Monsal Viaduct, finishing with a smooth, paved descent back into town via the Monsal Trail. With 187m of ascent, it’s a moderately hilly route that provides a perfect mix of technical trail and steady rhythm.
Steeped in history, this route traverses the heart of the White Peak's limestone landscape. Bakewell itself is famous for its namesake pudding, making it the ultimate spot for a post-run refuel. As you run across the Monsal Viaduct, you are crossing a feat of Victorian engineering that was once part of the Midland Railway—a structure once famously decried by John Ruskin for "spoiling" the valley, though it now offers runners one of the most spectacular viewpoints in England. Running through these dales feels like a journey through time, past old lead mines and through ancient woodlands that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
