This 5.1km circular loop offers a refreshing blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty, perfect for runners looking for a moderate challenge near Derby. The route features a gentle 65m ascent, making it "hilly" enough to engage your glutes without feeling overwhelming. Around 35% of the course is paved, while the remainder consists of well-maintained canal towpaths and park trails. You'll enjoy a Flat, fast stretch alongside the tranquil Cromford Canal before climbing slightly through the lush greenery of Codnor Park, providing a diverse mix of terrain that keeps every kilometer interesting.
Steeped in Derbyshire’s rich history, this area was once a bustling hub of the Industrial Revolution. The Cromford Canal, which you'll follow for a significant portion of the run, was designed by William Jessop and Benjamin Outram in the late 18th century to service the local ironworks and collieries. As you loop back through Codnor Park, you are running through land that once belonged to the expansive Butterley Company estate. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; the canal sections are a haven for kingfishers and herons, offering a peaceful escape from the nearby urban centers of Ripley and Ironville.
