This 14.6km circuit of Derwentwater offers one of the most iconic running experiences in the Lake District, striking a perfect balance between accessibility and technical challenge. Starting from Crow Park in Keswick, you'll tackle a mostly flat but varied terrain that keeps you right on the water’s edge. While much of the route follows well-maintained paths, the eastern shoreline demands focus with its rocky outcrops and tree roots, providing a genuine lakeside "trail" feel without excessive climbing. The western leg through Manesty woods and Brandelhow Park offers a softer, more sheltered forest floor underfoot, making this an ideal long run for those looking to build endurance without the vertical punishment of the fells.
Steeped in Lakeland history, this route passes through the very landscape that inspired the English Romantic movement. As you run past Lord’s Island and Derwent Isle, you are tracing paths frequented by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. The area surrounding the lake is also known as the "Birthplace of the National Trust," with Brandelhow Park being the organization's first major land purchase in the Lake District back in 1902. Runners should keep an eye on the water level at the southern footbridge over the River Derwent; after heavy Cumbrian rain, this section often floods, adding a bit of local adventure to your session before you head back into the bustling market atmosphere of Keswick.
This course includes one or more areas where higher levels of caution are recommended and your time is temporarily paused. We suggest reviewing the map in close up, where these sections are shown with dashed lines.
