Experience the rugged charm of the Cumbrian coastline on this 8.3km loop from Taylors Way. This route offers a quintessential English seaside run, blending technical coastal paths with a steady 185m of ascent that will challenge your legs and reward your eyes. While about 35% of the course is paved, you’ll spend significant time on undulating natural trails as you climb toward the dramatic St Bees Lighthouse. Expect breathtaking views over the Irish Sea and the steep sandstone cliffs—just be prepared for the exposed nature of the headland, where the salt air and coastal breeze add an extra layer of intensity to your training session.
Located in the Borough of Copeland, St Bees is famous for being the starting point of Alfred Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast walk. The red sandstone cliffs you'll run along are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, hosting the only colony of Black Guillemots in England. As you pass the lighthouse—which has stood in various forms on this headland since 1718—you are running through centuries of maritime history. The transition from the high cliff edge to the inland rural paths offers a peaceful glimpse into the West Cumbrian landscape, a hidden gem often overlooked by those heading straight for the Lake District peaks.
