This 11.0km circuit offers a classic Lake District fell running experience without the grueling vertical of the higher peaks. Departing from the Eskdale valley, the route takes you on a clockwise loop that perfectly balances sheltered woodland tracks with the exposed, undulating spine of Muncaster Fell. With an ascent of 222m, the terrain is characterized by a "hilly" profile that challenges your footwork across a varied mix of grassy paths, bare earth trails, and short paved sections. Runners can expect a rhythmic "rollercoaster" feel along the craggy ridge, providing sweeping, unobstructed views of the Scafell range and the Ravenglass estuary as you traverse the low-altitude heather and bracken.
Steeped in Cumbrian heritage, the area surrounding Muncaster Fell is a landscape where history meets the wild. The route skims the edges of the historic Muncaster Castle estate, a seat belonging to the Pennington family for over 800 years, and sits within the shadows of the ancient Roman road that once connected Ravenglass to Ambleside. Below the fell, you might hear the distinct whistle of the "La'al Ratty"—the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway—one of the oldest and longest narrow-gauge railways in the world. Running here feels like traveling through time, transitioning from the manicured beauty of the valley floor to the rugged, prehistoric character of the western Lakeland fells.
