Tucked away near Duddon Bridge, the circumnavigation of Penn offers a quintessential Cumbrian trail experience across a manageable 6.7km loop. Starting from a convenient gravel layby, runners will transition quickly from the road onto a mix of rugged tracks and undulating woodland trails. With 150m of vertical gain, the route classifies as a "Small" category fell run (SL), featuring moderate climbs that provide a satisfying aerobic challenge without feeling overwhelming. The terrain is predominantly off-road, so expect soft forest floors and stony bridleways that require nimble footwork, especially after a classic Lake District downpour when the woodland sections become delightfully technical.
The Duddon Valley remains one of the more tranquil corners of the Lake District National Park, often bypassed by the crowds heading toward Langdale or Windermere. Running around the base of Penn provides a unique perspective on the local geology and the industrial heritage of the Low Furness fringe. This area was historically significant for charcoal burning and iron smelting, evidenced by the nearby 18th-century Duddon Furnace. As you weave through the ancient broadleaf trees, you’re tracing paths once used by foresters and miners, now reclaimed by nature to provide one of the most peaceful and scenic training loops in the south of the county.
