Tackle the rugged beauty of Allerdale with this 7.6km loop through Whinlatter, England's only true mountain forest. Starting from the visitor centre, this trail is a quintessential Lake District fell run, boasting nearly 300m of ascent and a "hilly" rating that will test your climbing legs. You’ll navigate a mix of forest fire roads and technical singletrack as you push toward the summits of Barf and Lord's Seat. Reaching heights above 500m, runners are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells, though the exposed terrain means you should be prepared for rapid weather shifts typical of the Cumbrian highlands.
Whinlatter Forest is more than just a trail network; it is a vital part of the local ecosystem and a haven for the rare red squirrel. The area has long been a focal point for outdoor enthusiasts in the North West, sitting just a short drive from Keswick. Running past Lord's Seat offers a glimpse into the ancient geological history of the Skiddaw Group of slates, which form these distinctive, towering silhouettes. After finishing your loop, the visitor centre serves as a perfect hub to refuel and connect with the local running community, many of whom regard these forest trails as the ultimate training ground for the legendary Bob Graham Round.
