Starting from the quiet edge of Springs Road in Keswick, this 8.1km loop offers a quintessential Lake District fell running experience. The route features a significant 314m ascent as you climb toward the summit of Walla Crag, where the terrain transitions from paved sections to rugged, hilly trails. Runners will be rewarded with some of the most iconic panoramic views in Allerdale, looking down over the shimmering waters of Derwentwater toward the peaks of Catbells and the Newlands Valley. The descent toward the famous Ashness Bridge provides a technical challenge for trail enthusiasts before the path levels out for a lush, sheltered return through the ancient canopy of Great Wood.
Walla Crag is steeped in local history and Cumbrian charm, serving as a gateway to the high fells for generations of Lakeland explorers. The turnaround point at Ashness Bridge is arguably the most photographed packhorse bridge in England, a stone structure that captures the traditional rural heritage of the area. As you run through Great Wood on the return leg, you are passing through a site of Special Scientific Interest, home to some of the oldest Atlantic oak woodland in the UK. This route is a local favorite for its ability to pack dramatic elevation and diverse ecosystems—from open moorland to temperate rainforest—into a relatively short and accessible distance.
