This 8.7km loop offers a quintessential Lakeland running experience, perfectly blending a steady fell ascent with a fast, flat finish. Starting from Spoonygreen Lane, you’ll follow the Cumbria Way on a persistent but manageable climb toward the summit of Latrigg. At 271m of vertical gain, it’s a category SL (Short Local) fell run that rewards your effort with one of the most famous panoramic views in Allerdale, overlooking the shifting blues of Derwentwater and the rugged jaws of Borrowdale. The terrain is a mix of well-trodden bridleways and about 35% paved surfaces, making it an excellent choice for runners looking to transition from road to trail without technical mountain scrambling.
Steeped in Cumbrian history, the descent brings you onto the Keswick-Threlkeld Railway Trail, a beautifully restored path that runs through the heart of the Greta Gorge. As you traverse the historic railway bridges over the River Greta, you’re running across Victorian engineering that once connected these isolated mountain valleys to the rest of England. Latrigg itself has long been known as the "fell for everyone," a favorite of the poet Southey and subsequent generations of outdoor enthusiasts. Returning via Brundholme Road, keep an eye out for the ancient woodland that lines the gorge, which is particularly breathtaking when the autumn colors reflect off the water.
