This 7.5km loop offers an quintessential Lakeland fell running experience through the heart of Allerdale. Classed as a category SL (Short Local) course, the route packs a punch with 205m of ascent despite its relatively modest distance. Starting at Rigghause End off the A591, you’ll immediately tackle the climb up High Rigg. The terrain is entirely off-road, featuring technical grassy trails and rocky outcrops that demand nimble footwork. As you crest the ridge, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding fells before descending toward the picturesque St John's in the Vale. The return leg through the sheltered canopies of Sosgill Wood and Rigghause Wood provides a fast, scenic finish over soft woodland floor, making this a perfect moderate challenge for runners looking to transition from road to trail.
High Rigg is often described as a "miniature mountain," sitting prominently in the centre of a natural amphitheatre between the towering Blencathra and the Helvellyn range. Historically, this area has been a vital link for local farming and mining communities, and the 19th-century church of St John’s in the Vale—which you'll pass on your descent—stands as a silent witness to centuries of Cumbrian history. Running here feels like stepping back in time; the valley remains one of the more tranquil corners of the Lake District National Park, far from the bustling crowds of Keswick. Keep an eye out for the ancient stone walls and roving Herdwick sheep that are synonymous with this rugged landscape.
