Tackling Leg 1 of the legendary Bob Graham Round is a quintessential Lake District experience, offering 20.6km of rugged terrain and a demanding 1499m of vertical gain. Starting from the historic Moot Hall in Keswick, you'll begin with a steady grind up Skiddaw on well-defined paths, but don't let the early traction fool you. Once you peak Skiddaw, the character of the run shifts to soft, boggy fells and a notorious river crossing between Great Calva and Blencathra that requires nimble footwork. The climax is the descent from Blencathra; while the Hall's Fell ridge offers a thrilling, technical scramble for seasoned fell runners, the Doddick Fell alternative provides a slightly more forgiving, albeit slower, route down to the valley floor.
Keswick is the beating heart of English fell running, and the Moot Hall acts as the hallowed start and finish line for countless endurance feats. This region of Allerdale is steeped in mountain heritage, where the weather can shift from valley sunshine to alpine mist in minutes. Runners should respect the high-altitude sections above 500m, as Blencathra—often called the "People's Mountain"—is as unforgiving as it is beautiful. Whether you are reconning for a 24-hour attempt or simply seeking a world-class day in the fells, you are following in the footsteps of legends like Bob Graham himself, who first completed this monumental circuit in 1932.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
