This 8.1km loop offers a quintessential Lake District running experience, blending the flat, rhythmic pace of the Keswick-to-Threlkeld Railway Path with a punchy, scenic climb around the flanks of Latrigg. Starting from Brundholme Road, the first 3.6km allows you to find your stride on a smooth, paved terrain before the route transitions into a more rugged fell-running character. With 207m of ascent, the climb toward Skiddaw is categorized as a moderate challenge, rewarding runners with expansive views of the Derwentwater basin. The final stretch follows the iconic Cumbria Way, providing a technical yet manageable descent back into town that perfectly balances the route's initial speed with trail-focused elevation.
Located in the heart of Allerdale, this route traces a fascinating history of Cumbrian industry and exploration. The railway path follows the old Cockermouth, Keswick, and Penrith line, which served the area for over a century before its closure in 1972; today, it stands as one of the region’s most accessible multi-user trails. As you loop toward the Latrigg car park, you are treading on the gateway to Skiddaw, one of England’s highest peaks. This area has long been a muse for the Lake Poets like Wordsworth and Southey, and as you run through this UNESCO World Heritage landscape, it’s easy to see why the dramatic intersections of Lonscale Fell and the Glenderaterra Valley have inspired generations of adventurers.
