This 4.5km loop offers an invigorating blend of coastal scenery and steady pavement running around the iconic Newquay Golf Course. Starting from North Quay Hill, the route features a mix of flat stretches and manageable climbs, with a total ascent of 57m that provides just enough of a challenge for those looking to build their hill fitness. The highlight is undoubtedly the out-and-back section onto the Towan Headland, where runners are treated to dramatic panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the famous surf breaks of Fistral Beach. With roughly 30% of the path being paved, it’s a versatile choice for a morning tempo run or a scenic recovery jog.
Steeped in Cornish maritime history, Towan Head serves as a natural lookout that has guarded Newquay’s harbor for centuries. As you round the golf course, you are running through one of the most prestigious links layouts in the UK, established back in 1890. Keep an eye out for the historic Huer’s Hut perched above the harbor—a small white building where a lookout (or "huer") would once shout "Heva, Heva!" to alert local fishermen when shoals of pilchards were spotted in the bay. This route perfectly captures the spirit of Newquay, blending the town's athletic energy with its deep-rooted connection to the sea.
