Prepare for a rugged and rewarding 14.0km coastal challenge starting from New Polzeath. This loop is a true test of stamina, featuring a significant 510m of ascent across undulating clifftop paths and technical trail sections. Known for its "Hilly" rating, runners will encounter narrow paths with exposed drops, rough coastal terrain, and steep sets of steps between Penitreglaze and Port Quin. While about 5km is paved, the heart of this route lies on the South West Coast Path, offering breathtaking views of Pine Haven and the dramatic Atlantic swell that makes this stretch of North Cornwall so legendary.
Rich in maritime history, Port Quin is often referred to as 'the village that died'—a once-thriving fishing port that was abandoned after its entire male population was lost at sea during a 19th-century storm. As you run through this tranquil National Trust-protected valley, the contrast between the sheltered harbor and the wild, exposed cliffs at Lundy Bay is striking. Keep an eye out for Peregrine Falcons and the occasional Atlantic Grey Seal bobbing in the coves below; this area is a haven for wildlife and offers a glimpse into Cornwall's rugged, untamed past far away from the busy surf beaches of nearby Polzeath.
