Experience the very best of Falmouth’s coastline on this 4.9km loop that perfectly balances scenic beauty with a touch of elevation. Starting from the lush Queen Mary Gardens near Gyllyngvase Beach, you'll head east along the seafront, transitioning onto the ruggedly beautiful Castle Drive. The route is approximately 60% paved, offering a reliable surface for the majority of your run, but be prepared for some undulating terrain as you climb towards Pendennis Point. With 41m of ascent, it’s a moderately hilly challenge that rewards runners with panoramic views of the Fal Estuary and the vast Atlantic Ocean before looping back toward the beach for a well-earned cooldown.
Running this path feels like a journey through Cornwall’s maritime history. As you crest the hill, you’ll orbit Pendennis Castle, an impressive Henrician artillery fortress built in the 1540s to defend against European invasion. This headland has served as a strategic lookout for centuries, and today it provides one of the most dramatic backdrops for local runners. Keep an eye out for the giant ocean liners often anchored in the Carrick Roads, and if you’re running at dawn or dusk, the light over the Roseland Peninsula across the water is truly spectacular. After finishing your loop, join the local running community for a coffee at one of the cafes lining Gyllyngvase Beach.
