The Sandstone Trail Ultra is a formidable 56.8km point-to-point journey through the heart of Cheshire, offering a diverse mix of technical sandstone ridges, soft forest tracks in Delamere, and challenging hilly ascents. Starting with a sharp climb up Frodsham Hill, runners are rewarded with panoramic views across the Mersey Estuary before tackling 820m of total elevation. The middle section offers testing climbs through the Peckforton Hills and Raw Head—the trail’s highest point at 227m—while the final stretch transitions from muddy pastureland to a flatter, rhythmic finish along the Llangollen Canal towpath into Whitchurch. Given the 14km of paved surfaces mixed with heavy trail sections, footwear with versatile grip is essential, especially as conditions can become boggy across the lowland farm fields.
Steeped in geological and medieval history, this route follows one of the finest elevated ridge walks in England. As you traverse the Peckforton ridge, you’ll pass the iconic ruins of Beeston Castle and the Victorian-era Peckforton Castle, markers of the area's strategic importance over the centuries. Local runners often treat the Sandstone Café near Beeston as a vital midpoint refueling station before the ascent into the Bickerton Hills. Whether you are training for a mountain ultra or ticking off a bucket-list FKT, the trail offers a quintessential British countryside experience, linking the Weaver valley to the Shropshire border through ancient woodlands and sandstone escarpments.
