Embark on a quintessential forest trail with this 10km loop through the southern reaches of Delamere Forest. Starting near the visitor centre, this route offers a moderate challenge with 88m of ascent, featuring rolling hills and a completely unpaved surface that traditional trail runners will love. Expect a mix of wide gravel fire roads and winding forest tracks that stay relatively firm year-round, though the Cheshire clay can certainly get tacky after a typical English downpour. It’s an ideal distance for those looking to build their endurance on undulating terrain while enjoying the shelter of the dense canopy of pine and broadleaf trees.
Delamere, meaning "forest of the lakes," is a remnant of the ancient Huntington and Mondrem forests that once covered much of Cheshire. As you navigate the loop, you’re running through a landscape shaped by the last ice age, evident in the "meres" and peat mosses that punctuate the woodland. This area was once a royal hunting ground, but today it serves as a green lung for the region, offering a peaceful escape from the nearby industrial hubs. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, particularly the green woodpeckers and the rare white-faced darter dragonflies that inhabit the boggy edges of the forest.
