Route Overview & Local Insights

This 8.0km loop offers a refreshingly flat and fast running experience through the heart of the Cheshire countryside. Starting on Elworth Road, runners transition quickly onto the Wheelock Rail Trail, a smooth, paved corridor that provides a traffic-free environment perfect for finding a steady rhythm. With only 10m of total ascent, this route is exceptionally level, making it an ideal choice for tempo sessions or a relaxed recovery run. The second half of the journey brings a change of scenery as you join the Trent and Mersey Canal towpath, where the soft waterside atmosphere and well-maintained paths guide you back toward your starting point in Wheelock.

The area is steeped in industrial heritage, and running this loop feels like a journey through the region's transport history. The Wheelock Rail Trail follows the former route of the North Staffordshire Railway, which once bustled with steam engines transporting salt and sand. Connecting to the Trent and Mersey Canal—engineered by the famed James Brindley—you’ll pass historic locks and traditional narrowboats that still navigate this vital 18th-century artery. Today, these corridors have been reclaimed by nature, offering local runners a green sanctuary that links the charming village of Wheelock with its industrial past.
