This 6.6km loop from Scholar Green offers a perfect blend of tranquil canal-side running and a heart-pumping hill challenge. You’ll start with a flat, rhythmic stretch along the Macclesfield Canal towpath, but don't let the ease of the initial kilometers fool you. As you approach the "hilly" rating of 4, the terrain kicks up significantly with a 192m ascent toward the rugged ridge of Mow Cop. The mix of paved surfaces and steep, rugged paths makes this a technical but rewarding test of aerobic capacity, culminating in a fast, quad-burning descent back into the valley.
Rising above the Cheshire Plain, Mow Cop is steeped in local lore and is most famous for its "Killer Mile" and the iconic 18th-century Mow Cop Castle—a summer house built by Randle Wilbraham to look like a medieval ruin. As you reach the summit, you’re standing on primitive Methodist history; it was here that the very first camp meeting was held in 1807. On a clear day, your efforts are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across to the Peak District and the Jodrell Bank Observatory, making it one of the most scenic vantage points in North Staffordshire and Cheshire.
Adjust your pace to account for the steep 192m ascent to Mow Cop.
