Starting from the historic Nelson’s Pit car park in Poynton, this 11.0km loop offers a fantastic blend of solid canal-side tracks and more challenging, undulating terrain through the heart of Lyme Park. With an ascent of 207m, you’ll definitely feel the climb as you transition from the level, paved sections onto the soft, grassy slopes leading up to "The Cage." It is a moderately hilly run that rewards your effort with sweeping views across the Cheshire Plain and the Manchester skyline. The mix of surfaces—split roughly evenly between paved paths and natural trails—makes it a perfect choice for runners looking to transition from road to light trail while enjoying a classic English country estate backdrop.
Poynton-With-Worth is steeped in industrial heritage, and starting at Nelson’s Pit places you right at the site of a former 19th-century colliery. As you run, you are tracing the history of the North West, moving from the industrial utility of the Macclesfield Canal toward the grand, aristocratic expanse of the Lyme estate. Lyme Park itself has been managed by the National Trust since 1946 and was famously used as "Pemberley" in the BBC's adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Keep an eye out for the resident herd of red deer, which have inhabited the park for over 600 years, adding a wild and historic feel to every mile of your workout.
