Route Overview & Local Insights

Starting from Hurdsfield, this 7.7km loop offers a fantastic blend of Macclesfield's diverse running terrain. You'll begin with a smooth, rhythm-building stretch along the canal towpath before transitioning into the rolling farm fields of Kerridge. Be prepared for a bit of grit; the fields can get muddy in the winter months, making trial shoes a wise choice. The physical highlight is undoubtedly the steep, punchy ascent up to the Kerridge Ridge. Once you reach the top, you're rewarded with technical single-track running along the spine of the hill, leading you to the iconic White Nancy landmark before a rapid, quad-burning descent down the rocky steps and a flat, fast finish back along the water.

Local runners cherish this route for its connection to Cheshire’s industrial and hilltop history. White Nancy itself was built in 1817 by the Gaskell family to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Waterloo, and it serves as a proud sentinel overlooking Bollington and the Cheshire Plain. As you traverse the ridge, you are running through an area once bustling with stone quarrying that built many of the surrounding mill towns. This route perfectly captures the spirit of Macclesfield—transitioning seamlessly from the calm, heritage-rich canal system to the rugged, "Gateway to the Peak District" hills that define the local landscape.
