This 13.8km loop from Lamaload Reservoir offers a quintessential Peak District fell running experience, balancing technical ridge work with heart-pumping climbs. Runners will face a significant 463m of ascent, beginning with a steady grassy climb out of the Macclesfield Forest canopy that can become quite boggy after a Cheshire downpour. The highlight of the route is the stunning traverse along the Shining Tor ridge; here, the terrain shifts to weather-hardened flagstones, allowing you to find a fast rhythm while soaking in panoramic views of the Cheshire Plain. Be prepared for a tactical second half featuring a sharp descent into the valley, a river crossing, and a series of technical zig-zags before the final push back toward the forest.
Steeped in local history, Macclesfield Forest is the final remnant of the ancient Royal Forest of Macclesfield, a sprawling 13th-century hunting ground once frequented by Earls and Kings. As you climb toward Shining Tor—the highest point in Cheshire—you are running through an area rich in gritstone heritage and legendary local lore. The landscape transitions from the dense, managed pine plantations of the lower slopes to the wild, rugged moorland of Wildboarclough, named for the last wild boar supposedly killed in the region. Due to the exposed nature of the ridge and elevations exceeding 500m, this route demands respect for the elements, as the microclimate can shift from clear skies to thick moorland mist in minutes.
