Tackling the Hangingstone Loop from Danebridge offers a quintessentially rugged Peak District experience packed into a 6.5km circuit. You’ll earn your views early, as the bulk of the 125m ascent is packed into the first quarter of the run—a stiff climb that will certainly test your lungs and glutes. The terrain is wonderfully varied, transitioning from established forest trails to gritty, sandy tracks. Be prepared for technical footwork through rooty sections and potential mud or deep puddles if you’re running after a typical British downpour. It’s a Category SL (Short Local) course that rewards your initial effort with sweeping vistas and a fast, flowing descent back toward the River Dane.
Located on the southwestern edge of the Peak District National Park, Danebridge is a hidden gem that straddles the border between Cheshire and Staffordshire. This area is steeped in local folklore; as you climb toward the Hangingstone, you are running through the historic Forest of Macclesfield, once a royal hunting ground. The gritstone outcrops and the rushing waters of the River Dane provide a dramatic backdrop that has inspired locals for centuries. After finishing your loop, many runners head to the nearby Wincle Beer Co or the Ship Inn, traditional spots that have served weary travelers and gritstone explorers long before running shoes were invented.
