This 9.4km loop offers a fantastic blend of multi-terrain running that captures the very best of the Cheshire countryside. Starting with a sweep around the tranquil waters of Astbury Mere, runners will enjoy relatively flat, well-maintained paths before transitioning onto the historic Macclesfield Canal towpath. With a modest 66m of ascent, the route is classified as a "hilly" course, but the inclines are gentle enough to maintain a steady rhythm. The 35% paved ratio provides a mix of firm footing and soft trail, making it an ideal choice for runners looking for variety without the technical difficulty of steep fell running.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the area around Congleton and Astbury Mere reveals the evolution of the local landscape. Once a working sand quarry, Astbury Mere has been transformed into a thriving Country Park and a haven for local wildlife. As you join the Macclesfield Canal, you are running along a waterway that was a vital artery for the silk and coal trades during the 19th century. Local runners often favor this loop for its peaceful atmosphere and the "Bosley Cloud" views that peak over the horizon, offering a perfect snapshot of Congleton’s natural beauty and historic charm.
