Experience the sheer beauty of the Chiltern Hills on this 6.8km loop across the Dunstable Downs. This route offers a quintessential escarpment running experience, taking you along the high ridgeline on the outward leg before descending to return along the foot of the slope. With approximately 80m of ascent, it provides a manageable yet stimulating challenge for those looking to build hill strength without overwhelming vertical gain. The terrain is a mix of well-trodden chalk paths and grassy trails that offer excellent grip in dry weather, though they can become slick after rain. Running along the "top" provides breathtaking, unobstructed views across the Vale of Aylesbury, making every kilometer feel shorter than it is.
Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Dunstable Downs is the highest point in the county of Bedfordshire. As you traverse this historic landscape, keep an eye out for the colorful gliders and paragliders that frequently launch from the ridge, sharing the thermals with local red kites. The area is managed by the National Trust and is steeped in history, from the Bronze Age burial mounds known as the Five Knolls to its legacy as a grazing site for sheep that helped maintain the delicate chalk grassland ecosystem. Starting and finishing near the Chilterns Gateway Centre, this run is a local favorite for its combination of dramatic scenery and refreshing, wind-swept exposure.
