Route Overview & Local Insights

The Haddenham 10 offers a refreshingly flat and fast 10km loop through the heart of the Cambridgeshire Fens. Starting from Lode Way, runners will enjoy a mixture of paved surfaces and quiet country tracks as they head toward the village of Aldreth. The highlight of the route is a serene 3km stretch alongside the River Great Ouse, where the expansive skies and level terrain create a perfect environment for sustained tempo running or a long, rhythmic Sunday jog. With only 10 meters of total ascent, this is a prime choice for those looking to avoid the burn of the hills and enjoy a smooth, flowing pace through the East Anglian countryside before returning via the rural charm of Hoghill Drove.

Haddenham and its smaller neighbor, Aldreth, are steeped in English history, standing as significant landmarks in the Isle of Ely. This specific area was once the site of a legendary standoff between William the Conqueror and Saxon hero Hereward the Wake; the path toward the river follows the historic causeway where Norman soldiers famously attempted to cross the marshes. Today, the "Isle" remains an elevated patch of land surrounded by the reclaimed peat of the Fens. Running here provides a unique perspective on this ancient landscape, where the vast, open horizons and traditional drainage lodes tell the story of centuries spent taming the water-logged plains.
