Experience the perfect balance of Cambridgeshire charm on this 5km loop through the historic city of Ely. Starting with a gentle urban stretch along Lisle Lane, this flat and fast route transition quickly into the serene landscapes of the Fens. With only 21 meters of total ascent, it is an ideal course for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or clear their head amidst nature. The 50/50 split between paved surfaces and natural paths ensures variety underfoot as you navigate past Prickwillow Road toward the glistening waters of Roswell Pits, offering a refreshing breeze even on warmer days.
The true highlight of this run is the Roswell Pits area, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that transformed from 19th-century clay and gravel excavations into a thriving wetland sanctuary. As you loop back toward the city, look out for the iconic "Ship of the Fens"—Ely Cathedral—dominating the skyline. This area was once the heart of the local brick-making industry, but today it serves as a peaceful escape for local run clubs and birdwatchers alike. Running here connects you to the deep industrial heritage of the Ouse Valley while providing some of the most tranquil waterfront views in the East of England.
