This 7.6km loop offers a blissfully flat and fast experience through the heart of East Cambridgeshire’s unique wetlands. Starting from the Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, the route takes you along the historic Rothschild Way before tracking the serene banks of the River Cam. With 5.0km of paved surfaces and absolutely zero ascent, it is an ideal choice for a tempo session or a recovery run where you can truly find your rhythm. The final stretch along Wicken Lode brings you back through lush fenland vistas, though runners should be mindful of the uneven field edges which may prove a challenge for those with running buggies.
Wicken Fen is a place of profound ecological and historical significance, serving as the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve. As you navigate these ancient "undrained" marshlands, you are running through a landscape that once covered vast swathes of East Anglia. Keep an eye out for the resident Konik ponies and Highland cattle that help manage the scrubland, as well as the diverse birdlife that thrives in this protected habitat. It is a rare opportunity to experience the "Great Fen" as it appeared centuries ago, providing a tranquil, atmospheric backdrop that makes every kilometer feel like a step back in time.
