Tackle the rolling chalk hills of West Sussex with this invigorating 4.5km loop around Steep Down. Starting in the elevated Lancing Ring Nature Reserve, this route is a purist’s trail run—entirely unpaved and characterized by the "Hilly" classification that locals love to hate. With 73 meters of vertical gain, you’ll find the terrain provides a challenging mix of grassy tracks and flint-strewn paths. The effort is rewarded immediately as you circumnavigate the flank of Steep Down; the lack of paved surfaces makes it a perfect short session for testing your agility and building hill strength while taking in sweeping, uninterrupted views of the Adur Valley and the coast.
Locally known as "The Ring," Lancing Ring Nature Reserve is a site of significant geological and historical interest, boasting a diverse ecosystem of chalk grassland wildflowers and butterflies. As you round Steep Down, you are running through a landscape shaped by centuries of sheep farming and ancient habitation. This area of the South Downs National Park is particularly famous for its prehistoric earthworks and flint mines, offering a real sense of timelessness. Keep an eye out for the Dew Pond—a restored historical feature used to water livestock—which serves as a tranquil landmark before you push through the final climb back toward the reserve’s entrance.
