The Stanmer Loop offers a quintessential South Downs trail experience, packing 138 meters of elevation into a scenic 8.2km circuit. Starting from the historic Stanmer Park, this anti-clockwise loop takes runners through a diverse mix of woodland tracks and open parkland. You’ll tackle steady climbs through Pudding Bag and Highpark Wood, where the terrain is entirely off-road, transitioning between undulating forest paths and the soft turf of Millbank Wood. Rated as moderately hilly (Level 3), it’s an ideal route for runners looking to build strength on varied gradients without the technical intensity of the higher chalk ridges.
Steeped in history, Stanmer Park has served as a gateway to the Downs for centuries, with the village and its Grade I listed Stanmer House dating back to the 18th century. As you run through Highpark and Millbank Woods, you are traversing part of a Great Estate that once served as a private hunting ground and now acts as a vital nature reserve. Local runners know that this area evolves beautifully with the seasons; look out for the vibrant bluebells in spring and the dramatic golden canopy of the ancient beech trees in autumn. After finishing your loop, the village cafe is a popular local hub for a well-earned post-run coffee in the heart of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
