Experience the rugged beauty of the South Downs on this 7.1km clockwise loop starting from Saltdean. This route offers a moderate challenge with 138m of ascent, taking you through a mix of paved sections and undulating chalk trails. As you climb toward High Hill and Highdale Hill, runners are rewarded with sweeping views of the Sussex coastline and the rolling green ridges that define this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The terrain is classic "Downland"—firm and fast when dry but requiring careful footwork after rain. Finishing up at the Saltdean United football club, it’s a perfect distance for a solid weekday tempo run or a scenic weekend blast through the hills.
The area surrounding Rottingdean and Saltdean is steeped in literary and maritime history. Once a quiet smuggling village, nearby Rottingdean was notably home to Rudyard Kipling, who drew inspiration from the very hills you’ll be running over. The "Pickers Hill" section of the route traverses ancient agricultural land that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, providing a sense of timelessness as you move from the modern coastal suburbs into the vast, open sky of the National Park. Keep an eye out for the historic windmills on the horizon, which have served as vital navigational landmarks for both hill-hikers and sailors in the English Channel for generations.
