Route Overview & Local Insights

This 5.7km clockwise loop offers a refreshing blend of serene waterside trails and quiet road sections through the heart of North Turton. Starting along the lush banks of Bradshaw Brook, runners will enjoy a relatively flat and fast push toward the Jumbles Reservoir. The terrain is evenly split between paved surfaces and natural paths, making it a versatile choice for those who enjoy a bit of light trail work without sacrificing speed. While the overall ascent is a modest 36m, the "hilly" character of the area ensures enough undulation to keep your legs engaged and your heart rate elevated as you climb back toward Chapeltown Road and return to Turton Bottoms.

Steeped in industrial heritage and rural charm, Turton Bottoms and the Jumbles Reservoir area provide a quintessential Lancashire running backdrop. The reservoir itself was completed in 1971 and has since become a haven for local wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. As you navigate the section through Chapeltown, you’ll be running through an area once dominated by textile mills and bleach works, now transformed into a peaceful residential enclave. Keep an eye out for the historic Turton Tower nearby—a grade I listed building with roots dating back to the 12th century—which serves as a reminder of the deep history through which this picturesque route passes.
