This 9.5km loop offers an invigorating blend of challenging climbs and tranquil waterside cruising. Starting with a punchy ascent up Bathampton Down, runners will tackle the bulk of the 141m elevation early on, passing the lush greens of the golf course and the modern campus of the University of Bath. Once you’ve conquered the hills, the terrain transitions into a flat, fast-flowing finish along the historic Kennet and Avon Canal towpath. It’s a classic "climb then coast" route, perfectly suited for those looking to mix hill strength with sustained tempo running on a well-maintained, largely paved surface.
Bathampton is a village steeped in Roman and Georgian history, serving as a peaceful gateway to the Cotswolds just outside the bustling city of Bath. As you descend toward the canal, you’ll be running through an area once vital for transporting coal and stone during the Industrial Revolution. Keep an eye out for the narrowboats and the iconic Bathampton Swing Bridge; the local community has a deep-rooted connection to the water, and you'll often find runners and rowers sharing the views under the shadow of the spectacular Dundas Aqueduct nearby. It is a quintessential Somerset landscape that highlights the region's unique balance of rugged downs and engineered waterways.
