Route Overview & Local Insights

The Dan Booth Round is a challenging and immersive 40.4km ultra-distance loop that showcases the rugged periphery of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath. With nearly 1,000 meters of ascent, this anticlockwise journey transitions seamlessly from rolling pastures and quiet country lanes to technical off-road trails that can become famously muddy during the winter months. Runners will conquer an undulating profile that summits several iconic Bath trigs, offering sweeping panoramic views. While much of the route is secluded, be mindful of a brief 300m section along the A367 which lacks a pavement, requiring extra caution. This is an ideal circuit for endurance athletes looking for a serious hill session or a long-distance training run with various "escape routes" back into the city centre if needed.

Beyond the physical challenge, this route carries deep resonance within the local running community, having been established in memory of Dan Booth, a cherished ultra runner. As you traverse the landscape, you are running through layers of British history; you'll cross the site of the 1643 Battle of Lansdowne and climb Little Solsbury Hill, an Iron Age hill fort that dates back over two millennia. The trail also passes through the charming village of Newton St Loe, where a farm shop detour offers a perfect mid-run caffeine fix. From the architectural splendor of Bath’s limestone crescents visible from the heights of Kelston Hill to the refreshing natural spring in Swainswick, this route perfectly blends the wild Somerset countryside with the elegant heritage of one of England’s most beautiful cities.
