Experience the best of Somerset’s flat and fast terrain on this 8.5km out-and-back route through the historic city of Bath. Starting at Brassmill Lane, this 100% paved course follows the iconic Bristol and Bath Railway Path, offering an exceptionally smooth surface perfect for speedwork or a steady recovery run. Runners will enjoy a lush, green corridor removed from city traffic, crossing the River Avon three times on impressive Victorian-era bridges. With only 22 meters of total ascent, this is arguably one of the flattest routes in the region, making it an ideal choice for setting a new personal best or tapering before a race.
The path itself occupies a storied section of the former Midland Railway, which once connected the Midlands to the South Coast but transitioned into the UK’s first major rail-to-trail project in the late 1970s. As you traverse the three bridges, you’ll catch glimpses of Bath’s industrial heritage interspersed with the natural beauty of the Avon Valley. The route provides a unique perspective of the city's outskirts, where the limestone architecture of world-famous Bath begins to give way to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. It is a favorite among local running clubs who value the uninterrupted stretch and the cooling breeze that often drifts off the river.
