This 7.7km coastal adventure at Holyhead Mountain offers a rugged and rewarding experience for runners who love technical terrain and significant vertical gain. With 331m of ascent and a "Hilly" rating of 5, this Category AL route is pure fell running bliss. Starting from Pwll Clai, you'll navigate rocky coastal paths with sweeping views of the Irish Sea toward the South Stack Lighthouse (Ynys Lawd). The return leg takes you inland for a demanding climb over the summit of Holyhead Mountain, where the unpaved, heather-lined trails require nimble footwork and a keen eye for line choice.
Holyhead Mountain (Mynydd Twr) is the highest point on Holy Island and is steeped in ancient history, featuring the remains of an Iron Age hillfort known as Caer y Twr. As you crest the summit, you aren't just gaining a PR; you're running through a landscape once inhabited by Roman watchmen and prehistoric settlers. The area is also a vital sanctuary for rare birds like the red-billed chough and peregrine falcons, making it one of the most biodiverse and historically significant running locations in North Wales.
