Experience one of the flattest and most striking running routes in North Wales with this 7.8km out-and-back journey along the Holyhead Breakwater. Starting at the Holyhead Maritime Museum, this 100% paved course is a dream for runners looking for a consistent rhythm and sea-level views without the challenge of Welsh hills. You will head out toward the iconic lighthouse, feeling the Irish Sea breeze on your face as you traverse the Victorian engineering marvel that stretches nearly 2.4 kilometers into the bay. It is an ideal route for speedwork, tempo runs, or a steady recovery session, offering a completely unobstructed path where the North Wales coastline serves as your backdrop.
Steeped in maritime history, the Holyhead Breakwater was constructed between 1848 and 1873 using limestone quarried from the nearby Holyhead Mountain. As you run past the haunting ruins of Soldier’s Point House—a castellated mansion formerly home to the project’s chief engineer—you are moving through a landscape that once hummed with the labor of 1,300 men. Today, the area is much more tranquil, often frequented by local anglers and birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for grey seals in the harbor and the various seabirds that nest along the rocky outskirts of the breakwater as you approach the distinctive white-and-black lighthouse at the far end.
