Experience one of South Wales' most popular flat-run destinations with this 4.0km out-and-back route across the Cardiff Bay Barrage. Starting from the Penarth end, runners will enjoy a 100% paved tarmac surface that is blissfully free of hills, making it an ideal choice for a PB attempt or a smooth recovery session. The path is wide and well-maintained, providing plenty of space to find your rhythm while soaking in the panoramic views of the Severn Estuary on one side and the freshwater lagoon on the other. With the crisp sea air and zero elevation gain, this is a fast, accessible course perfect for runners of all abilities looking for a coastal escape.
The Cardiff Bay Barrage is much more than just a running path; it’s an award-winning engineering feat completed in 1999 that transformed the local landscape. As you head toward the Cardiff side, you’ll pass the massive lock gates and bascule bridges that manage the tides of one of the world's most dramatic maritime environments. Historically, this area was the heart of the world's coal export trade, and you can still feel that industrial heritage blended with modern leisure. Keep an eye out for local landmarks like the Custom House in Penarth and the Scott of the Antarctic exhibition near the locks, which commemorates Captain Scott’s ill-fated 1910 expedition that set sail from these very waters.
