Starting from the National Trust car park in the heart of Cynwyl Gaeo, this 8.0km loop offers a fantastic blend of paved lanes and rugged woodland tracks. With approximately 139m of ascent, you’ll encounter a moderate climb through the trees that will certainly get your heart rate up, but the reward is worth the effort—the higher elevations offer sweeping, panoramic views across the Cothi Valley. The transition from the smooth 40% paved sections to the gravel tracks provides a varied underfoot experience, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to bridge the gap between road and trail while enjoying a steady, "Category 3" hilly challenge.
Beyond the trails, runners are traversing land steeped in ancient history. This route winds through the Dolaucothi Gold Mines area, the only known Roman gold mine in the UK. As you navigate the woodland paths, you’re following in the footsteps of miners who worked these hills nearly two thousand years ago. The village of Cynwyl Gaeo itself is quintessential Welsh countryside, serving as a peaceful gateway to the Brecon Beacons. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and the distinctive red kites often seen soaring above the valley, adding a touch of wild majesty to your training run.
