Route Overview & Local Insights

This 4.5km out-and-back route offers a pancake-flat experience through the heart of Carmarthen, making it a favorite for speed work or a recovery jog. Starting at the Carmarthen rail station, you'll cross the bridge and turn left to shadow the curves of the River Towy (Afon Tywi). With 90% of the course on well-maintained paved surfaces, it is an accessible, year-round option that avoids the notorious Welsh mud. The loop around the local leisure centre provides a natural mid-point before you retrace your steps, enjoying a totally level gradient that is rare for this hilly region of West Wales.

Running through Carmarthen is a jog through history; as one of the oldest tiered settlements in Wales, this area was once the Roman site of Moridunum. As you track the riverside path, you are following an ancient trade artery that once brought Roman galleys and medieval merchants into the town. Today, the Towy is celebrated more for its natural beauty and wildlife—keep an eye out for herons or the occasional fisherman searching for sewin (sea trout). This route perfectly blends the town’s Roman heritage with the tranquil, green landscape that defines the Towy Valley.
