This 11.1km adventure through the Black Mountains offers a quintessential Welsh trail running experience, blending technical ascents with breathtaking ridgeline running. Starting from Talgarth, you'll immediately face a challenging climb to the ancient ruins of Castell Dinas before tackling "The Dragon’s Back"—a dramatic, undulating ridge that feels like running along the spine of a sleeping giant. With 568m of vertical gain, the terrain consists primarily of grassy tracks and bare earth trails. Reaching the summit of Waun Fach at 811m (the highest peak in the range) rewards your effort with expansive, sweeping views across the Brecon Beacons, though be prepared for muddy sections if the Welsh weather has been characteristically damp.
Steeped in Iron Age and medieval history, this route passes through one of the most culturally significant landscapes in Powys. Castell Dinas, which you'll encounter early in the run, holds the title of the highest castle in England and Wales, sitting atop an Iron Age hillfort that once commanded the Rhiangoll valley. The local town of Talgarth is a traditional "Gateway to the Black Mountains" and serves as a perfect post-run base, known for its restored flour mill and strong community of fell runners and hill walkers. This route isn't just a physical challenge; it is a journey through a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, offering a sense of true mountain isolation just a short distance from the trailhead.
