This 16.8km loop from the Hay Bluff car park offers a quintessential Brecon Beacons experience, blending technical fell running with breathtaking ridge lines. Classified as a Category SL (Small Long) course, you’ll tackle 595m of vertical gain, including a punchy ascent up the iconic "Cat’s Back" on Black Hill. The terrain is largely unpaved and truly hilly, demanding respect as you navigate exposed sections above 500m. Runners will be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Olchon Valley before the heart-pumping climb to the Black Mountain South Top (637m) and the eventual high point of Twyn Llech at 704m. The final descent from Hay Bluff is steep and exhilarating—perfect for testing your technical downhill skills.
Steeped in Welsh border history and geological drama, the area around Llanigon and the Black Mountains feels ancient and untamed. The ridge you'll traverse follows the border between Wales and England, offering a unique perspective on the shifting landscape of the Marches. Locals know that these peaks can be shrouded in cloud one moment and bathed in golden light the next, so staying adaptable is key. Keep an eye out for the wild ponies that graze these uplands; they are as much a part of the Hay-on-Wye backcountry as the famous bookshops in the valley below. This route isn't just a workout; it's a journey through the rugged heart of the "High Black Mountains."
